The University of Toledo has transformed to become
the fourth largest university in the state of Ohio with the merger of
The University of Toledo and the Medical College of Ohio on July 1,
2006. UT, a nationally
recognized, comprehensive public university, serves approximately 21,000
students from almost every county in Ohio, all 50 states, and 98 foreign
countries and offers more than 250 programs of study in eight
colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health and
Human Services, Law, Pharmacy, and University College. Dr. Lloyd Jacobs, The University of Toledo’s president, stated, “Act in the present and in doing so you will create the future. That’s what The University of Toledo is all about.” The mission of UT is to improve the human condition; to advance knowledge through excellence in learning, discovery and engagement; and to serve as a diverse, student-centered public metropolitan research university. The College of Education is also undergoing a transformation. First, it was renamed the Judith Herb College of Education by Dean Thomas Switzer on May 6, 2006. Judith and Marvin Herb, two UT graduates, contributed $15 million to fund numerous scholarships as well as educational assessment support and research initiatives. The College of Education is the only college at The University of Toledo to be a named college and one of two named colleges of education at a State University in Ohio. Second, the Gillham Hall building is being renovated to become the state-of-the-art facilities to become entirely wireless with information technologies available in every classroom, informal spaces for students to gather and learn, a tiered 75 seat classroom, space for research and grant initiatives, three computer labs, and seven general purpose classrooms. The education faculty can create diverse learning opportunities for education students in this newly renovated building. Dean Switzer keeps the college focused on its vision: “Individuals at the center of their own learning within a rich intellectual environment characterized by choice.” The college is noted for excellence in teacher and administrator preparation and for the quality of its faculty. Degrees range from the Bachelor's to the Ph.D. The college is committed to quality teaching, to the enhancement of knowledge, and to service to its urban community. In fulfilling this mission, the college plays its role in preserving, protecting, and advancing our democracy. Judith Herb College of Education views these changes as an opportunity to change the culture of schooling. “The Judith Herb College of Education must not settle for what is, but must imagine what could be and to make it a reality,” stated Dean Switzer. |
